So as the question asks, do you really support free speech. One of the best ways to know if someone truly supports free speech is to see if they are willing to stand up for the most controversial levels of free speech.
The UN wants to BAN Shota and Loli porn. For those of you who don’t know what Shota or Loli is, it’s anime of young children, sometime sexual in nature, and according to the UN, It’s a human rights violation. If you don’t believe me read what is be proposed.
“Child pornography is defined in article 2 OPSC as ‘any representation of a child engaged in real or simulated explicit sexual activities, regardless of the means used, or any representation of the sexual parts of a child for primarily sexual purposes’. The qualification ‘by whatever means’ reflects the broad range of material available in a variety of media, online and offline. It includes, inter alia: visual material such as photographs, movies, drawings and cartoons; audio representations; any digital media representation; live performances; written materials in print or online; and physical objects such as sculptures, toys, or ornaments.
“The Committee urges States parties to prohibit, by law, child sexual abuse material in any form. The Committee notes that such material is increasingly circulating online, and strongly recommends States parties to ensure that relevant provisions of their Criminal Codes cover all forms of material, including when the acts listed in article 3.1(c) are committed online and including when such material represents realistic representations of non-existing children.”
Now we can all agree that actual abuse of actual children is harmful, yet when we look at loli or shota we got to ask the very question, who is being harmed? These are drawing and fictional stories. These are not real people? No harm is done in making this kind of content, yet this worst than just banning something people don’t like but a violation of freedom of speech.
Now lets talk for a minute about actual exploitative material. When actual people are being harmed and doing something against their will, you have a victim. The fact you have a victim shows you are now taking someone’s self autonomy way and they are doing something they may not want to be involved in. If this thing being proposed was actually about saving children I would have no problem with it.
So what does any of this have to do with free speech violations? Simple as I have already stated because no one is harmed in the making of this kind of content and no ones autonomy was violated there is no reason to make it illegal. So if you want to ban something, just because it might make people uncomfortable or grossed out, then you are violating someone’s freedom of speech. We have seen time and again people wanting to ban certain speech, and yes a lot of speech is controversial, but banning it is dangerous and can lead to a government that doesn’t allow you to criticize it.
So to answer my question in the title. Do you really support free speech? Well if you are okay with the UN banning this type of content than no, you don’t support free speech. Remember just because you support someone’s right to say or read something doesn’t mean you have to agree with said content.
